Lochnagar and my next 4 Munros

As the training continues so does the hill walking, the blisters, the blackening of my toe nails and a newly added factor, the beautiful weather!  Today we ventured out for another trek over some rugged Munros with breathtaking views in 360 degrees.  We parked at the car park for the Loch Muick trail head and departed at 8:30 am.  In order to accomplish this I was up at 5AM!!

We started off on the trail that follows the signs for Lochnagar and began our 20 mile trek for the day.  The sun was shining and the temperatures were very pleasant. There was still a cool breeze this morning as it had been snowing in these mountains just two days prior.  As the day progressed and our miles accomplished started to increase the weather continued to stay glorious!  My feet on the other hand wanted to know when they would be done and out of my hiking boots which Emily and I decided are in fact now too small for my feet and are causing my poor toe nails to bruise.  I'm not sure if my feet have grown in the 4 years since I purchased my hiking boots or if they have shrunk or a combination of the two but I will be getting new one ASAP!

We banged out Lochnagar, Carn a'Choire, Cairn Bannoch and Broad Cairn for the 4 Munros of the day.  There are a total of 6 Munros that you can check off while on this route but as my feet began to scream I elected to only do the ones necessary to get us off the mountain and back to the car.  So that just means that I will have to come back with my properly fitted hiking boots and do this again so I can check off the remaining 2 Munros.  You are probably thinking, my didn't I just cowgirl it up and do it... you don't know the pain that I was in, there was NO way I was going to walk out of my way just to bag 2 extra Munros.  I would rather go back and do all 6 properly than do them in a weak and wimpy way.

All in all it took Emily and I 9 hours to hike 20 miles.  So our major mile treks for training are behind us and I can only hope that they have prepared us for the Caledonian Challenge as it is now just 3 weeks away.  I want to give a special thanks to Jill, Ryan and Angus for taking Kady for the past two weekends while I was off gaining distance.  I appreciate it more than you know to be able to leave her with such great friends who wear her out so I don't go mental from her energy and need for long walks after wearing myself out on really long walks...

Mount Keen - Munro #2

I finally got another Munro under my belt.  This one was part of my training for the Caledonian Challenge which is just under a month away!  Emily and I started off early this morning under a cover of low lying mountain fog with our final destination of Mount Keen by Glen Tanar.  At times it was quite thick especially as we were ascending Mount Keen. But alas we broke through the blanket of fog and was greeted by warmth and sun as we reached the summit.  In total it took us 8 hours to walk 18 miles.  The walk didn't pass without some foot issues.  I was trying out my trail running Merrell shoes to see if they would be a good fit for the flatter part of the Caledonian Challenge but they will not work.  I ended up with 5 blisters from them so I'm keeping those shoes for shorter forest walks and might possibly try trail running in them.. maybe.  I also realized I am starting to have issues with my regular hiking boots.  They are only a problem when I descend as my toes jam into the front of the boot, worst on the left foot.  Needless to say I was DRAGGING my feet by the time we reached the car and I am starting to seriously question my rational of this whole challenge...  what has possessed me to want to walk 54 miles in 24 hours!?!?!?!

If you would like to sponsor me in my efforts for this challenge you can do so here: http://www.caledonianchallenge.com/teams/UKAsset54milers

Budapest

I have wanted to visit Budapest for many years now and with this being my last year living on this side of the pond I decided that I needed to move Budapest up to the top of my bucket list.  I made the decision to go to Budapest about 3 weeks before I actually went.  I check with United to see if I could get a "free" ticket using my miles and was in luck!  So far this year I have been able to book 4 flights using miles so traveling is becoming "cheaper" in terms of flights.. I'm just booking more expensive trips!!

I was originally going to Budapest by myself but last minute my friend Erin decided to join me.  We had an amazing tour guide, my friend Greg who lives in Budapest.  I met Greg through Julia last summer when Julia and I were in Iceland.  I was truly lucky with how well the trip came together and it was an amazing time.

We spent 2.5 days walking around Budapest, taking in the sights, shopping, eating and relaxing in the thermal baths.  Erin and Greg both flew out on Tuesday which left me on my own to explore the city and finish my shopping for the remaining 1.5 days of my trip.  I couldn't have asked for a more relaxing trip!

If you find yourself in Budapest I would recommend staying on the Pest side near St. Stephen's Basilica.  Definitely spend the money to go to the top of the dome for amazing 360 views of Budapest. We stayed at the Kempinski Hotel Corvinus Budapest and I would highly recommend it.
